Team Challenge
Take the Challenge – The Heartbreak Hill Challenge –
Please note: Only those who are registering for the 160K course may enter. (This hill is not on the other three courses.)
Heartbreak Hill Challenge: A timed ride up a hill (approx. 12% grade) which is a little more than a kilometer in length. Timing will be provided by electronic chip timing. Riders who participate should register and sign in approx. 1 hr. before the ride start time of 8am. Please note that there will be a five dollar additional fee when registering to defray the associated costs and so as to ensure that all pledges raised support the United Way.
Prizes: Awarded to the top performance in each category: Male, Female and Team. The team prize is the United Way Polka Dot jersey. The winning team will keep it for a year to display in their workplace, shop, home or place of business. The top male and female riders will receive non monetary product prizes as a token of achievement. To preserve the notion of good fun and sportsmanship, none of the prizes will have significant monetary value. The best prize will be the self awareness enjoyed by all riders who will know that they competed and did their best.
To be eligible to win, a rider and/or a team must complete the entire course appropriately. (No short cuts) and there must be no dispute from the Hill monitors regarding rider or team conduct on the course. (Riders must at all times consider safety and courtesy on the course)
Open to individuals or teams, there will be a prize for the top individual male and female, and there will be a team winner. The winning team will receive the United Way Polka Dot jersey to be displayed for one year in their offices, shop, and place of business or in their homes. The team competition is open to any team of 6 or more riders. For an additional fee upon registration of five dollars (to defray costs and enable all of the pledged money to support the United Way) riders will be timed on a particularly challenging part of the course which is slightly more than a kilometer in length and rises at an approximate grade of 12%. The challenge is significantly into the ride, and to participate and be eligible riders must complete entire 160K route (please note the challenge is not on the other three courses) correctly prior to the Hill. (i.e., you can’t put your bike in a car drive to the hill and ascend). For the team competition the winner will be determined by the average time of the six riders. This average will be assigned as the team’s performance.
Please remember: The purpose of the Heartbreak Hill Challenge is simply to provide interest and a challenge for some of the teams and individuals who wish to participate. We strongly emphasize that the purpose of the ride is to have fun, raise some money for United Way and enjoy riding. It is only a jersey. It is all in fun. No one should cheat, dope, or knock down a rider so as to move up in the challenge. Indeed, such conduct would disqualify a rider or team.
